80 People Arrested on Capitol Hill Protesting the Republi-fascist Health Care Bill

On Monday, July 10, in the face of Republican senators and the Trump/Pence fascist regime plowing ahead with their health care bill, protesters went into Senate and House office buildings in Washington, DC, in a righteous action against the cruel and vicious assault on health care. The police arrested 80 of the protesters. As they were handcuffed and taken away from the offices, some dragged by the cops, the protesters shouted, “Health care is a human right!” and “You are systematically killing people!”

The protesters are right—what Trump/Pence and the Republicans are doing to health care will literally kill many people. As we’ve written, “The Senate version of the Trump/Pence ‘health care’ bill would strip health coverage from 22 million more poor and oppressed people over the next decade. It would raise costs, reduce coverage, cut vital services, slash Medicaid, defund Planned Parenthood, and kill even more people than are already dying because of this capitalist health care system.... All this would come down hardest on Black, Latino, Native American and other oppressed people.” And the anti-woman outlook of Christian fascism is embedded in the bill, including blocking Medicaid payments for care provided by Planned Parenthood.

Trump and the Republicans’ attacks on the most basic kind of health care for millions of people are a horror—and resistance to this outrage needs to spread. And, as Andy Zee, an initiator of Refuse Fascism, wrote in a piece about the critical juncture represented by the July 15 nationwide “Trump/Pence Must Go” protests: “To all who are confronting members of Congress over their vicious cutting of essential health care for millions, keep on them, but now is the time to also be raising the demand that the Trump/Pence Regime Must Go! And, now is the time for you to be part of organizing for July 15.”
