March on July 25, 1998

There will be a march and rally at the United Nations
Saturday, July 25, 1998.

Organizers of Puerto Rico '98 say: "100 Years of U.S. Colonialism in Puerto Rico ¡Basta Ya!"

The demands of the march are:

  • Free Puerto Rico! Independence and Self-Determination for the Puerto Rican Nation.
  • Bring them home! Free the Puerto Rican Political Prisoners and POWs.
  • End Colonialism in the U.S.--Defend the rights of Puerto Ricans living in the U.S.
  • Stop Government repression of the Pro-Independence movement
  • Participants will be meeting at noon, at 59th and Columbus Circle, in New York City.

    There is also a
    "National Call to Washington, DC on July 25, 1998."
    Organizers describe the purpose of this march as:

  • To denounce the Centennial of the U.S. invasion and colonialization of our nation, Puerto Rico
  • To reaffirm our right as a nation to a true process of self-determination
  • To demand the release of the Puerto Rican political prisoners and prisoners of war.
  • A vigil will be held in front of the White House from 12 p.m. on the 24th to 12 p.m. on the 25th.

    There will be an ecumenical service on July 25, at noon at the Disciples of Christ Church on 14th & Massachusetts.

    There are plans to march from there to the White House for the main rally.

    Marches are also being planned for Puerto Rico itself, including at Guánica, the site of the original U.S. invasion of 1898.
